What is psychotherapy?

According to the American Psychological Association, in psychotherapy, therapists help people of all ages live happier, healthier, and more productive lives. Therapists apply research-based techniques to help people develop more effective habits. There are several approaches to psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psychodynamic, among others, that help people work through their problems. Psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a therapist. Therapists provide a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who is objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental. Most therapy focuses on individuals, although therapists also work with couples, families, and groups.

how does it work?

Therapy usually consists of weekly 45-minute sessions discussing whatever you bring to the table. The therapist's role is to ask questions and allow you to think about your situation differently or to help with finding a solution to a concern based on your treatment goals. Talking with a therapist or counselor can help you deal with thoughts, behaviors, symptoms, stresses, goals, past experiences, and other areas that can promote your recovery. Of course, talking with a therapist about personal issues can be tough, but it can help you come to grips with problems in your life. It can also offer an emotional release and a sense of really being heard, understood, and supported.
